PKULaw.cn School Unveiled to Open a New Chapter for Smart Law Education

Though winter is drawing near, the campus of Peking University is still bathed in the color of golden autumn. On the morning of November 9, 2018, the Unveiling Ceremony of PKULaw.cn School & Forum on Smart Law Education was held at KoGuan Building, the administrative building of Law School of Peking University. This event was co-sponsored by Peking University Law School and the PKU Law AI Lab and Research Institute of Peking University ("Law AI Lab"), and supported by Chinalawinfo Co., Ltd. (pkulaw.cn). More than 50 representatives from law schools of prestigious universities, departments of legal practices, and information and knowledge service providers attended this event. The unveiling ceremony was presided over by Ms. Chen Zhihong, Director of Law Library, Law School of Peking University.

In his speech, Professor Pan Jianfeng, Dean of Peking University Law School, extended congratulations on behalf of the Law School to the official inauguration of PKULaw.cn School, holding that the spreading of knowledge and the ways of education have undergone tremendous changes against the backdrop of the new "Internet + Education" model. He believes that with joint efforts of all parties concerned, PKULaw.cn School will be able to help more people enjoy the pleasure of thinking, the splendor of wisdom, and the power of knowledge.

Mr. Zhao Xiaohai, General Manager of Chinalawinfo Co., Ltd. and Vice Director of the Law AI Lab, also delivered a speech at the ceremony, introducing the business development of Chinalawinfo Co., Ltd. under the leadership of Peking University Law School, and making an insightful analysis of the current situation of legal education and training as well as the future cooperation with the Law School in continuously exploring the new "Internet + Education" model and developing it into a new form of business.

Then the Dean of Peking University Law School Professor Pan Jianfeng, Deputy Dean Mr. Yang Xiaolei, Vice Director of Law AI Lab Mr. Zhao Xiaohai, and the student representative of the Law School Mr. Shen Lintong, joined hands to unveil the official establishment of PKULaw.cn School.

As a future-proof online platform for smart law education, PKULaw.cn School has attracted considerable attention from law students, who have actively competed for prizes for handwriting works for the Chinese name “法宝学堂” (“PKULaw.cn School”). Selected by a panel of experts, four students (Shen Lintong, He Yuxin, Li Jiaying, and Liu Jiawei) entered the final round-all are on-campus students of Peking University Law School. Professor Pan Jianfeng granted the prizes to the four winners; and Shen Lintong made a speech to share the deep gratitude to Peking University expressed in his calligraphic work.

"No mountains are too high to reach; no oceans are too broad to cross". The PKULaw.cn School is one of the important measures of Peking University Law School in providing smart law education, and it will launch a new model of producing legal knowledge and offering legal services, according to Deputy Dean Mr. Yang Xiaolei in his speech at the ceremony. He held high expectations for PKULaw.cn School, in his comments on the background, smart law education, basic functions and operating modes of the School, and believes that in both macro or micro contexts, continuing exploration and development of smart law education is highly essential for Peking University Law School; and with distinct advantages in knowledge sharing and creation, the PKULaw.cn School can embark on a new journey with a firm belief by making full use of new technologies and pursuing new models.

After the unveiling ceremony, the Forum on Smart Law Education was inaugurated. Dr. He Yuanqiong, Deputy General Manager of Chinalawinfo Co., Ltd. gave a comprehensive introduction to the operation, planning, construction, and cooperation modes of PKULaw.cn School by centering on the positioning and features of the School.

Professor Jiang Su, representative of the professors in Peking University Law School and Vice Director of the Law AI Institute, stated that in today's circumstances, big data and artificial intelligence have exerted a huge influence on the whole legal profession, legal education, and law research, and the PKULaw.cn School should undertake the mission of the times in creating its own smart law education.

Mr. Wu Jiangshui, a member of Education Commission and Vice Director of Enterprise Counseling Commission of All China Lawyers Association (ALA) and a lawyer, said that cultivating practical legal professionals by means of artificial intelligence is a future trend, and the development of the PKULaw.cn School needs crossover mindset and vision so as to reduce the learning cost of legal profession and raise the technical standards for legal training.

Ms. Bai Lili, an alumna of Peking University Law School and Book Editor-in-Chief of Igetget.com, an online knowledge service brand, said that the future landscape of the education industry will be the integration of professional knowledge with popular content, which can provide a professional learning platform and educational training for those that have a growing demand for learning in all sectors. Furthermore, she also shared her valuable suggestions on how the PKULaw.cn School should develop in the future, in combination with her years of work experiences and expertise.

Mr. Guo Zhenzhong, Vice Director of ALA Education Commission, Mr. Li Hong, Director of V&T Law Firm, Mr. Yang Xuri, President of Beijing Power-nation Intellectual Property Institute, and Ms. Ai Jing, Executive Secretary of Peking University Alumni Association, also shared with the audience their thoughts and views from different perspectives, and gave practical advice for and extended their best wishes to the future of the PKULaw.cn School.

In the construction of Phase One of the PKULaw.cn School, a PC client end (http://edu.PKULaw.cn.com) and a mobile learning platform (WeChat account: 法宝学堂) have been successfully established. So far, the School has a total of 1,358 courses, of which 78 have been launched, with seven major categories and 52 sub-categories. More than 900 lecturers from universities, legal communities and law offices have been invited to give lectures. In the future, the PKULaw.cn School will cooperate with more third-party institutions in such aspect as content production, knowledge payment, and digital content publication.

The Unveiling Ceremony of the PKULaw.cn School & Forum on Smart Law Education came to a complete success. After that, the Phase I activity of the PKULaw.cn School – Forum on Enterprise Legal Affairs was initiated. Themed on topics including contract management and legal risks for enterprises, concepts and methods in the design of solutions, and ideal and reality of management system, the Forum invited Mr. Wu Jiangshui, Vice Director of Enterprise Counseling Commission of All China Lawyers Association, to offer analysis; and Professor Liu Kaixiang and Professor Chang Peng'ao, of Peking University Law School, and Mr. Ye Xiaohua, Director of Enterprise Legal Risks Research Institute of China Association of Business Law, to offer interactive professional comments.

In the future, the PKULaw.cn School will continue to provide a series of online and offline training, forums and exchange activities.
