The Twelfth National People's Congress recently voted approved the Amendment (IX) to the Criminal Law during its Sixteenth Session.
The Amendment (IX) further reduces the number of offences with death penaltyto nine types of offences. Additionally, the Amendment (IX) to the Criminal Law revises the standards for conviction and sentencing of the corruption-related offences, dividing the sum of embezzlement into three levels, namely, relatively huge, enormous and especially enormous. As for the widely concerned offence of having sex with under-age girls, the Amendment (IX) officially abolishes this offence and treats the conduct as a circumstance of rape which will trigger heavier punishment.
