Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (Standardization Administration) released the National Standard GB 43284-2023 Requirements of Restricting Excessive Package—Fresh Edible Agricultural Products, effective from April 1, 2024. The National Standard makes clear technical indicators and determination rules for excessive package of fresh edible agricultural products such as vegetables (including edible mushrooms), fruits, livestock & poultry meat, aquatic products and eggs. Technical indicators involve three dimensions. First, the document proposes a ceiling interspace ratio of 10% to 25% for fresh edible agricultural products of different categories and sales packaging weights. Second, the number of packaging layers for vegetables (including edible mushrooms) and eggs is no more than three, and for fruits, livestock & poultry meat, and aquatic products, no more than four. Third, the ratio of packaging cost to sales price is in general no more than 20% for fresh edible agricultural products, and no more than 15% for those sold at a price of above 100 yuan, including strawberries, cherries, waxberries, loquats, livestock & poultry meat, aquatic products or eggs.
